This is not merely another workbook with intercultural incidents. The first part consists of photographic materials, which are used for observation, analysis and understanding of cultural features. Before any attempt at understanding cultural characteristics, one has to learn how to see them first: all too often our own cultural preconceptions make us blind to noticing what is different. Then, the workbook moves the user from observation to analysis: asking the right questions. And eventually, analysis leads to understanding and appreciating cultural differences. The first section of the workbook ends with a number of ethical cultural dilemmas which will encourage readers to reflect on some tough choices that have to be made in real life. In the second part of the book, more complex intercultural situations, incidents and misunderstandings are presented for analysis and action-taking. All the materials in this book are real-life cases. Most of them were originally collected by the author himself from reliable sources, and they are transcribed here with a constant concern for accuracy and relevance. Anyone interested in intercultural communication will benefit from this book, whether it is in a class setting or individually.

Dit Engelstalige boek bevat geen lange beschrijvingen van interculturele verschillen, maar denkoefeningen die je met een open geest naar die verschillen wil leren kijken. In een eerste deel krijg je per pagina een aan een bepaalde cultuur verbonden zwart-witfoto, waarbij dan een vraag wordt gesteld. Bij de foto's krijg je geen informatie over de context, en op die manier word je uitgedaagd om voorbij onze culturele preconcepties te kijken. Daarna worden complexere interculturele situaties, voorvallen en misvattingen beschreven en komt een aantal culturele dilemma's aan bod, weeral met veel vragen die geen eenduidig antwoord hebben. Dit werkboek kan het best in groepsverband worden gebruikt en kan door de Engelse tekst ook een interessant instrument zijn binnen groepen waarin verschillende culturen vertegenwoordigd zijn. Leerkrachten kunnen bovendien een handleiding verkrijgen bij de auteur. Per pagina is er telkens veel witruimte en bij het tekstgedeelte werd een kleine letter gebruikt. Vragen in het tekstgedeelte werden in cursief geplaatst. Een uitdagend boek dat door zijn open houding een echte aanrader is.
