Omschrijving Sacred Times For Chosen People
do Messianic Jews reinterpret and reformat biblical/Jewish holidays?
· Is the worship style of their congregations a return to 'Jewish roots'?
· What is the rationale of the Messianic Movement and its celebrations?
Combining historiography and analytical investigation, this study brings to light the various ways in which Jewish believers in Jesus identify with the heritage of their people. Celebrating Sabbath and 'the Feasts of Israel' appears to be a major, if not the most important cultural identity marker - especially of Messianic congregations.
Here we have the first comprehensive research of a phenomenon that characterises the Messianic Movement and arouses much interest among Gentile Christians.
With a sharp eye for detail but without ever losing the larger picture out of sight, the author describes the socio-cultural situation in which this practice arose and developed. From the analysis of calendars, interpretations, rites, liturgies and motivations, emerges the picture of a novel holiday tradition, with many variations.
Does Messianic holiday practice imply a return to the Jewish roots of Christianity? Is it a way of marking boundaries between Messianic congregations and their 'parent communities', Christianity and Judaism? As the author takes up these and other questions from a missiological perspective, he offers clarity and challenging insights.
Originally presented as a doctoral dissertation, this study deserves to be widely read in the Messianic Movement and among its outside observers. It is highly relevant for the area of Jewish-Christian relations, and the Jewish roots of the Church. As for missiology, it offers illuminating insights in the contextualisation of the Gospel.
Practical theologians are challenged to look afresh at the Church Year and the function of sacred times, while Jewish and Christian historiography will benefit from valuable information about the often untold story of Jewish believers in the past.
