Het fictieve, voor de kust van Cornwall liggende eiland Combe wordt beheerd als rustoord voor overspannen topmensen uit politiek, industrie, kunst en wetenschap, die er in alle rust, weg van de media kunnen herstellen. Als de beroemde schrijver Nathan Oliver dood is gevonden in de vuurtoren moet commissaris Adam Dalgliesh met inspecteur Kate Miskin en brigadier Francis Benton-Smith de moord snel en discreet oplossen. Veel van de gasten en staf blijken een motief te hebben om de nare Oliver te doden. Het onderzoek wordt moeilijk als Adam wordt getroffen door SARS en een tweede moord plaatsvindt. Maar ook ziek denkt hij door en kan met zijn efficiënte team de dader pakken. In het werk van de belangrijke Britse detectiveromanschrijfster (1920) spelen psychologische motieven en morele kwesties een grote rol. Deze roman is actueler en levendiger dan voorganger 'The murder room'*.
