October 1891: Seventeen-year-old Lonie Vernier and her brother Anatole abandon the gas-lit streets of Paris for the sanctuary of the Domaine de la Cade, some miles south of the city of Carcassonne. Na haar bestseller 'Labyrinth'* heeft de auteur een historische thriller geschreven die zich afspeelt in Carcassone ( Frankrijk) waar de schrijfster een huis bezit. Twee verhalen zijn dooreengevlochten met Parisienne Leonie en de Amerikaanse Meredith als hoofdrolspeelsters. Leonie vertrekt in 1891 met haar broer Anatole uit Parijs om te logeren bij hun tante Isolde, die een geheimzinnig door wouden omgeven landgoed, La Domaine de la Cade, bewoont. De Amerikaanse Meredith is in 2007 in Parijs i.v.m. haar studie over het leven van Claude Debussy en besluit een uitstapje naar het zuiden van Frankrijk te maken. Ze is ook op zoek naar haar voorouders en vermoedt dat ze uit deze streek komen. De parallelle verhalen zitten goed in elkaar, zij zijn spannend en uit alles blijkt dat de schrijfster veel onderzoek heeft gedaan. Jammer is dat ze de lezer veel wil uitleggen. Het boek is perfect geconstrueerd en Mosse knoopt alle eindjes aan elkaar. Voor liefhebbers van occulte zaken, tarotkaarten en mysterieuze natuurverschijnselen is het zeer de moeite waard.
