Gabriella Mondini is a rarity in sixteenth-century Venice: a woman doctor, who sets out to find her missing father after he disappears on a mysterious journey. Also a doctor, her father has left clues - thoughtful, often enigmatic letters from his travels, as he researches his vast encyclopaedia, The Book of Diseases.
Her overwhelming journey will take her through great university cities, centres of medicine and remote villages across Europe. Along the way, while transcribing notes on maladies and treating the ill with the medical knowledge learned from her father, she, along with her faithful servants and travelling companions, encounters danger, love, tragedy, and a final revelation about a family secret and her father's fate.
