Jacob de Haan (broer van schrijfster Carry van Bruggen) emigreert in 1919, doet onderweg plaatsen als Londen, Napels en Cairo aan, en noteert in de Kwatrijnen indrukken, gevoelens, en verwachtingen, en herinneringen aan Nederland. Na aankomst in Palestina blijft hij dat doen, terwijl hij daar woont, reist en zich religieus, politiek en sociaal engageert. Waarbij een goed oog voor leuke jongens een prominente rode draad is. Jacob de Haan (brother to famous Dutch author Carry van Bruggen) migrates to Jeruzalem in 1919 and visits a diversity of cities on his way, notably London, Naples and Cairo. In the Quatrains he makes notes of impressions, expectations, feelings, and memories of Holland. After his arrival in Palestine he keeps on doing just that, traveling around and engaging himself religiously, politically and socially. Eroticism and an eye for cute boys is a prominent thread running through all of his observations.
