Breaking through the Brass Ceiling

Women in the U.S. military have found the road to

the top positions to be a very long and slow

process. This book is the result of a study on the

small group of military women who have broken

through the "brass ceiling" of the military to

become General and Flag officers, and their

strategies for career success. These strategies

include, but are not limited to, decisions about

career versus family, leadership style, behavior in

the workplace, mentoring relationships, and response

to career and personal challenges. While some

recent research has focused on executive women in

the civilian workplace, there is little to no

similar research on executive military women. This

research fills the gap in knowledge about women in

the elite echelons of the military, and finds that

they can have both a satisfying and successful

military career, as well as a nurturing home life.
